"Oh, Darling, Yeh Hai India!" is a Hindi film set during the Indian independence movement. Starring Naseeruddin Shah and Om Puri in lead roles, it is a story that follows a widower's search for his wife's killer. Its production was complicated by its history: the project was delayed for three years while work towards independence continued. The film won six National Film Awards and the Golden Lion award at the 1966 Venice Film Festival. The film was written by director David Lean, who also adapted from screenwriter Tazim Malik's novel "Yes My Darling Daughter". In 2005 it was included in BBC Culture Magazine's list of "100 greatest films of all time. The film follows Sikh Naseeruddin Shah's search for the people behind his wife's death. He is joined by his old friend, the Hindu doctor Shashi Kapoor, who has helped him in the past. As they search for clues they are constantly being harassed by police led by Inspector Dixit (Anil Dhawan), who is looking for a scapegoat to take all the blame. They become suspicious of everyone around them. Soon, friendship and trust develop between the three men and they start to work with each other to discover who was behind Nayab's death. The film remains true to its original story and finds Naseeruddin Shah playing the dual roles of a man unaccustomed to violence and an innocently violent man whose wife is killed by a person who comes from his own community.The film's soundtrack was composed by Ravi and consists of eight songs, two of which were instrumental. The songs were sung by Lata Mangeshkar, Mukesh, Kishore Kumar, Shailendra Singh and Ghulam Ali Khan. Review aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes reported that 97% of critics gave the film a positive review based on 26 reviews with an average score of 9/10. In addition, it holds a 100% rating on review aggregator website Metacritic based on 10 reviews from mainstream critics. In 2000, the British Film Institute ranked the film number 30 in its list of the top 100 British films. In 2005 it was included in BBC Culture Magazine's list of 100 greatest films of all time. David Lean's film was a great success in India, despite a mixed reaction from critics. Shot entirely in India and several locations within the UK including London and Cambridge, Lean put much effort into his attempt to make a realistic film set in India. The movie was shot on location over three months with hundreds of extras and lavish sets designed by Vincent Korda at Shepperton Studios outside London. The film won six National Film Awards in India in 1967 including the Merit Certificate for Best Feature Film with A Certificate of Merit for the black & white cinematography.It is also included in the book, "1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die"."Oh, Darling Yeh Hai India" was released on DVD by The Criterion Collection on 26 January 2011.
