Elena Undone is a 2010 romantic drama directed by Maria Pulera and starring Ashley Judd. The screenplay, written by Maria Pulera and Alexandra Aldea, focuses on a woman who goes to Brazil for her estranged father's funeral after two years of estrangement. There she discovers he had established himself as an Evangelical preacher and has left his American wife and children in order to marry a Brazilian woman with whom he fathered 10 children. Upon meeting her stepmother, step-siblings, half-siblings and step-grandfather (who also was her biological grandfather) Elena is forced to reevaluate the life of privilege she rejected upon leaving home. Realizing she has grown to resent her step-siblings and step-grandmother, she is determined to find a way back into their lives. "Elena Undone" premiered at the 2010 Toronto International Film Festival in September and was released theatrically in the United States on 15 November 2010 by Fox Searchlight Pictures. Irina (Ashley Judd) is a single mother of two teenagers, both of whom live with her father, Charles (Michael Vartan). Her mother died when they were little and her father lost contact with his wife after having an affair and leaving her and their children for another woman. Irina tells Charles that she is heading to Brazil for her father's funeral, but it turns out that she has to go too. She arrives in Brazil unexpectedly, and learns the reason for his recent decision to marry another woman (they had ten children together), and the reasons she resents her stepmother (the stepchildren were also not aware of her existence). On her way to find Elena, Irina gets into an accident. She wakes up in a hospital under the care of Dr. Kramer (Jeffrey Nordling). Kramer is Elena's stepbrother (he was adopted by Charles' parents during World War II) who works as a heart surgeon at one of the top hospitals in Brazil. He has been dating Irina for a while but she doesn't know it. They fall in love during the hospital stay, which ends when Irina leaves to go back to her life in New York. She writes him a letter saying she wants to go back to Brazil with him, and starts to connect with her half-siblings. Together they try to reunite the family, especially Elena's mother (who is not very receptive) and help Elena find out who she really is (and find out that she has assumed some of her father's traits).The film received mixed reviews critics; it currently holds 50% on Rotten Tomatoes based on 84 reviews with an average rating of 5.8/10. The site's consensus reads: "Dull, poorly directed and directed by a first-time filmmaker, "Elena Undone" is a film that will likely alienate most viewers." Metacritic gave the film a score of 37 out of 100 based on 22 reviews.
